Victorian Terraced Townhouse in Primrose Hill North West London, NW1

planning permission : refurbishment : extension : interior design : bespoke furniture

Conservation Area

Commissioned to completely refurbish and remodel this badly run-down Victorian terrace house in Primrose Hill conservation area, TAG Architects obtained planning consent for a roof extension, lower ground floor alterations and changes to the front facade. As a result the lower ground floor was enlarged allowing for proper kitchen, dining and family areas, the enlarged top floor allowed for a new studio and terrace, while the remaining areas were refurbished and reorganised.

The brief called for a fresh feel of the interiors while retaining the essential period character of the building. This was achieved by combining modernist streamlined detailing for the new spaces of the lower ground floor and the top floor with reinstated period detailing for the middle floors. The new staircases leading to the lower ground and the top floor acted as transitional modernist elements, while the bathrooms focussed on streamlined functionality with high quality materials. The combination of modern and traditional lighting adds flexibility and freshness to the house. The result is a house that offers relaxed period interiors aided by modernist functionality and robustness of the kitchen, bathrooms and studio areas, creating energising visual contrasts when moving through the floors.

All the built-in high quality furniture and joinery was designed in-house, the palette of materials and finishes was selected to unify the contrasting styles throughout the house.
