Built in the 1970s, this modest family mews house with an internal garage, had suffered considerable dilapidation over time. With a limited budget, our brief was to remodel and refurbish the property, providing an open plan layout on both floors.

After gaining planning permission from Camden Borough, we removed the fa├žade of the building and reconstructed it to create a streamlined, modernist front. Floor-to-ceiling glazing on the ground level, allowing the accommodation to be bathed in natural light, is balanced by more modest windows on the upper floor. Having renewed the internal fabric with steel and concrete, we provided superior floor and roof structures allowing enhanced thermal and acoustic performance. Updating the essential services and systems in the property, enabled us to create an energy efficient house, meeting new building guidelines.

A futuristic spiral staircase, encased in glass blocks, forms a novel focus to the interior. The fitted and free-standing solid beech furniture, sourced from Ikea, is stylistically harmonious with the internal scheme and suited the conservative budget. We achieved an on-brief, quality build, incorporating solid beech flooring, hardwood double glazing and modern lighting, whilst effectively working within the available funds.
